(More customer reviews)I haven't had the heater long enough to comment on its durability or cost of operation,but I've read reviews from customers who've owned them for up to 8 years (apparently as long as they've been made)with no problems, and many reviews that rave about how little propane they use. (One reviewer said 1/10th as much as his previous--very popular name-brand--portable gas heater.)

It is the handsomest, most unobtrusive, simplest to install and operate, most beautifully designed heater of any kind I have ever seen--and the professional LP man who hooked it up was blown away by the excellence & simplicity of the mechanisms and the accuracy of the thermostat. He had never seen or heard of a gas heater that could use either LP or NG w/no adjustments or conversion kit.

We bought it as a supplement to our vented Jotul propane stove, but I swear it could heat our small two-story house by itself.It was our sole source of heat last week as we waited for the Jotul to be installed, and the second-lowest setting on the (five settings) thermostat is the highest we've turned it.With nighttime temps in the lower 20s this week, even at thelowest setting we've several times shut it off completely because our upstairs bedrooms were too warm. On the next mornings it took no time at all to warm up the house.Just amazing!

I didn't buy the blower fan, knowing that the best possible heat-distribution is via ceiling fans reversed on low speed, which we already have.

The enamel is beautiful, a soft ivory white.The heater can be wall-hung or sit right on a hard floor, but because I changed my mind and decided to put it in the carpeted hall instead of a wood floor, I ordered the neat little bolt-on feet that raise it 2". Because we are not sure where we might most want some extra heat once the Jotul is hooked up, we had an extra gas cock installed in another room so we can move it to where it's needed.It is easily moved, its shipping weight was just 20 lbs. incl. the heavy box & packing material.Only 8" deep, it fits right against a wall and needs only 2" clearance on the sides.

At this point it seems simply too good to be true.The air has been very dry, and the moisture generated by unvented LP heaters has been a blessing rather than a problem. My house is a century old and there's enough fresh air exchange that I don't worry anyway, but the built-in ODS is a comfort. There is no odor at all that I can discern.I didn't even notice anything the least bit bothersome about the new-heater odor they tell you to expect the first hour or so of operation.Absolutely silent except for the normal little clicking as the metal expands when the thermostat kicks in.

If there's something worth mentioning as I use the heater, I will add it to this review.But for now I'll just say that this just might be the best heating buy in the universe.Who needs $10,000 furnaces?

(More customer reviews)This is the second heater of this size I have owned and I am happy. After 3+ years of regular useage, I broke the first one I owned. The heat output is good for general purposes. I used my first one for night ball games. This unit is not very large and as such, I appreciate that fact. Having to carry a larger unit was not what I wanted. The controls are easy to use, and the self-ignition is nice! I had a problem with this unit the first time I used it as the unit flared up at the mixing nozzle. Pretty good flames.: ) I had to reach through the flames and turn the tank off. Of course, the flames died immediately: No harm, no foul as they say.
I believe, if you are not comfortable with this potential issue, DO NOT USE PROPANE or PROPANE ACCESSORIES!
Anyway, Amazon has been great with the exchange.
Good unit for the size and price.
I only gave it 4 stars because of the issue mentioned above. I will buy another if/when I break this new heater!

(More customer reviews)There is nothing wrong with the hose itself. Just be absolutely sure it is exactly what you want. Because returning it is no easy task. It turned out the hose was not compatible with what I needed it for, so I attempted to return it. Returning the product was painstaking. The company, ANTOnline makes you jump through a dozen different hoops before you can return it and then ultimately rips you off, by charging you a restocking fee.You'll have to contact the company providing your reasoning for the return, wait a few days and they will send you an RMA# which you need to return it, then after they receive the item they determine without previously informing you, how much of a refund you will actually get (its not a full refund, they keep a little for themselves). The original cost of the item for me with taxes and shipping turned out to be around 18 dollars. I then had to pay an additional 7 dollars in shipping fees to return it. My refund was only 10 dollars!!! So I basically pissed about 15 dollars away because of ANTOnline. I will never do business with ANTOnline again!!!

(More customer reviews)The triple burner Mr. Heater works wonderfully! Now this is what you call a radiant heater! Prior to purchasing Mr. Heater I was using a Bernzomatic patio heater (that cost significantly more) that didn't heat very well - I had to practically hug the Bernzomatic to feel heat. The triple burner Mr. Heater keeps me toasty warm! I love the red glow it gives off too! I installed Mr. Heater on a 40 lb. propane tank - this is just the right height to keep me warm while on my deck swing.

Mr. Heater isn't a particularly stylish unit - however, it sure does heat well!

I have a few minor criticisms; overall I'm very happy -

During my first week using Mr. Heater the burners kept shutting off - they would not stay lit for very long. I adjusted the thermocouples to position them closer to the burner and I haven't had a problem since.

Mr. Heater doesn't work very well in wind - it works fine in a breeze or a little bit of wind. I tried to use it on my deck in a storm with fairly gusty winds - not a good idea. The wind tended to cause the burner to ignite the chamber that carries the gas to the burner. If this happens - you'll know it.

It'd be really nice to have an electric ignition! The two burner model has this; however I really wanted a maximum amount of heat - I wanted the three burners.

It'd be really nice if the propane tank mounting hardware was adjustable for height. If I mounted Mr. Heater on a 20 lb. propane tank it'd simply be too short to set next my patio table or swing. If you could adjust the height a couple of feet that'd be nice - you can probably jerry rig something.

Overall, it heats great - an excellent value too, in relation to the cost of patio heaters (which is what I use this for).

******* 2//2010 Update *******
While it's been a great product the last couple years, another issue has become evident. Mr. Heater is not rust resistant! It's rusted to the point that I can't use it anymore. I kept it in an enclosed screened in porch so it was never exposed directly to rain. However, rain that was blown in and the summer humidity has had a big impact. I've replaced Mr. Heater with another manufacture's version that doesn't rust.

Choosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.What are the different types of space heaters?

Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.

Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips. How powerful a heater do I need?
Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:

Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.

The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.
Do space heaters cost a lot to operate?
As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.Are space heaters a fire hazard?
Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. (More customer reviews)We have only used it once so far, but it (and the heater) worked perfectly.My family of four spent two nights in our tent with nighttime temperatures dipping into the low 40s.Each night, we would turn the heater on high for about an hour before we put the kids to bed.Then, we'd leave it on low until morning.The 10'x14' tent remained quite comfortable all night long.In two nights, we used approximately 1/2 of the propane in the 20lb. bottle (which was full when we started).As such, there was no need to change out propane bottles during the trip.Very convenient -- and much more cost effective than using the individual 1-lb. bottles.

We used a battery-powered carbon-monoxide detector so that we could feel more comfortable letting the heater run all night.The alarm never went off, and we experienced no problems.This makes me feel much better about using this heater in a tent in the future.Even so, I will always use it only with the CO detector.

The manufacturer recommended using the filter when using bulk propane tanks to fuel the heater. It worked so well on my heater (no fuel related problems in the last 12 months) that I also installed one on my Coleman two burner stove which I have hooked to a 20 lb tank also. For the small cost, it really saves you a lot of problems with propane contaminents and maintanence costs.

Hayward H100IDP1 Low Nox Induced Draft 100,000 BTU Propane Pool Heater Review

The unit started leaking before I had the gas installed!Then, the Hayward company made accusations that the alkalinity in my pool water may have caused the problem. There was no problems with my chemically balanced pool water! I could see it was a factory defect in the solder of the copper tubing. Anyway, I replaced the heat exchanger, and it seemed OK.Now, just a few months later... the heater will not work!The unit will not ignite and it is wasting gas!I attempted to resolve the situation by contacting the pool store, in which they informed me to contact a Hayward representative. After several attempts, I was unable to contact someone/anyone at Hayward. I tried to get some information from the Hayward web site... completely useless.Then trying to find someone to service this particular unit... they complained about this model H100ID1. They said they have had numerous problems with this particular heater.It is absolute junk!No help from Hayward, No help from servicers, No help from sellers,... you are on your own!Stranded with a useless pool heater. Buyer beware!
