Lux Products ELV4 Programmable Line Voltage Thermostat Review

I bought this thermostat (four of them actually) to replace four 28-year old analog thermostats controlling the baseboard heating in a condo I bought as a second home. These digital units immediately let me set temperatures without having to guess and constantly juggle to get a proper temperature as the old non-digital thermostats required. They hold temperatures within a nice narrow range (although they can be programmed via a dip switch to let temperatures fluctuate a bit more for possible energy savings) for each room.Installation was simple (note that you do want to cap off the second set of wires if you have a 120V system -- read the instructions and note how any existing thermostats are wired to make installation easy). The $2 faceplates which can be ordered separately seem to be necessary to get a finished look on the installation since the thermostats apparently do not mount flush to all boxes.

Each unit takes 2 batteries (AA) so get them before you install the unit. They recommend two major brands and no others -- probably a good idea to follow that suggestion. This is not a "rechargeable battery" setup.

Aube by Honeywell TH110-SP-P/U Electric Heating 7-Day Programmable Thermostat Review

Aube by Honeywell TH110-SP-P/U Electric Heating 7-Day Programmable Thermostat

I purchased one of these and a Lux ELV4 about 1 year ago, and have spent time with each.

Pros:
- Great display.I can read the display in dim light with no glasses (my eyes have standard age-related long-arm syndrome).

Cons:
- This Aube controller has only 2 temp settings, demarcated by moon & sun.CONTROLLERS MUST HAVE 3 SETTINGS! (1) Morning/evening warm, (2) nightime cool, (3) daytime way cool.
- The relay clicks when it goes on and off, quietly, but loud enough to wake up my wife. (I imagine the relay will last longer with its swift switching.)
- To disable heating, as in summer or warmer days, take face plate off, slide switch to standby, but then the display is blank and the temperature is not displayed.

The much lower cost Lux ELV4 has 3 temp settings :-), but I can not read the tiny LCD display even with my reading glasses and room lights on, the icons are miniscule. The Lux is quieter switching. The Lux has a big air gap between it and the wall such that I can see into the electrical box, ugly, will not cover the hole in the drywall if drywall cut-out is only 3/8ths larger than the box.The Lux has a nice slide switch on the side to disable heat for warm days & summer, but the display stays on.

Neither this Aube nor the Lux quite do it, I will be looking at other models for further purchases.

I want the Lux features with the Aube display.

After searching the local home improvement stores, I ordered this heater in Almond from Amazon.com.Apparently, all of the local stores carried other brands that only came in white or would not order an off-white color even if available.
The heater was fairly easy to install, but the length did cause some handling problems that some wooden blocks took care of.After installation, the heater did have a pronounced "hum" that the Cadet website says is rare and that it can be exchanged at the local store.Well, this turns out to be a problem with web orders! The people at ace hardwareoutlet.com were helpful to resolve this issue and I just received the replacement unit that is waiting to be installed.

I had to replace two old 24 inch baseboard heaters in a beach house remodel. The space available wouldn't take anything larger, and the 24 inch heaters were impossible to find locally.Amazon was a great option.

The cadet heaters work well, and look good. The dial is a little hard visualize where to set it, but once you figure it out, just put a couple alignment marks on it.

Good functional product.
